LAS VEGAS, NV -- Sonic Solutions has announced support for Blu-ray, a high-density DVD format that is competing with DVD-HD to be the next generation DVD format. Blu-ray DVDs can hold up to 25 GB of data, and Sonic's support includes Roxio's line of software for the Mac; Sonic acquired in December of 2004.
"With the capacity to store four to five times the content of a standard DVD, Blu-ray Disc can satisfy the requirements of a whole new range of data-hungry applications, including high-definition video recording and playback, data backup, and personal media archival," said Jim Taylor, general manager of Sonic's Advanced Technology Group, in a statement. "The increased capacity of Blu-ray, combined with data transfer rates of up to 36 Mbps, offer both consumers and professionals a new range of recording applications."
Neither Blu-ray nor DVD-HD drives are available in the market yet, and Apple has not thrown its support behind either format as of yet. Sonic's announcement today, however, means that Mac users of Toast, Jam, and Popcorn will be able to use the format if and when Apple supports it, too.
