AT&T, the exclusive carrier of Apple's iPhone, has agreed to purchase the Oklahoma-based cell carrier Dobson for US$2.8 billion. Dobson currently serves the rural midwest, southwest and Alaska, effectively letting AT&T expand its primary coverage areas, according to the Wall Street Journal.
AT&T may be able to offer the iPhone in more areas soon. |

The deal means that Apple's popular combination iPod and smartphone may eventually be available in regions that historically have been roaming areas for AT&T customers. It also means that AT&T should be able to save about $2.5 billion in roaming expenses and overhead costs.
AT&T is awaiting final regulatory approval which should come before the end of 2007.
