Apple Pauses Older iOS Updates in Australia Due to iPhone Network Problems

Apple Releases iOS 18.7.4, iOS 16.7.13, iOS 15.8.6, iOS 12.5.8 Alongside iOS 26.2.1

Apple has paused several iOS updates in Australia after reports that some older iPhones lost network access following recent software installs. The problem affects calls, including emergency calls to 000, which raised immediate concern among carriers and users.

The issue surfaced days after Apple released multiple updates across its platforms. While most users updated without trouble, a specific group of older iPhone models began facing connection failures on Australian networks. As a result, Apple stopped the rollout of certain updates while the problem is under review.

What triggered the pause

Australian carrier Telstra flagged the issue in a support notice published on January 28. In the notice, Telstra said it is “investigating an issue preventing some older Apple devices from connecting to our network,” adding that this includes calls to “000.”

Telstra also advised customers to wait before installing the affected updates. The company said it is working “as a priority with Apple” and will share updates as they become available.

iPhone models affected

According to Telstra, the issue appears limited to a small set of older devices running a specific software version:

  • iPhone 8 updated to iOS 16.7.13
  • iPhone 8 Plus updated to iOS 16.7.13
  • iPhone X updated to iOS 16.7.13

Users on these devices may experience problems connecting to the network, which can block calls and mobile services.

Apple halts older iOS releases

Following Telstra’s warning, Apple paused several updates released earlier this week for older iPhone models. These include:

  • iOS 18.7.4
  • iOS 16.7.13
  • iOS 15.8.6
  • iOS 12.5.8

Apple has not shared a public explanation yet, but the pause suggests the company is actively investigating the carrier-side issue before resuming distribution.

What remains available

Not all recent updates are affected. iOS 26.2.1 remains available and does not appear linked to the network problem. Apple continues to offer this update to supported iPhone models without restriction.

If you use an older iPhone on Telstra’s network, delaying updates is the safest option for now. Telstra has asked customers to wait “until we confirm the issue is resolved.” Apple and Telstra are expected to provide further updates once testing is complete.

For now, the pause serves as a precaution. It ensures users retain network access while both companies work toward a fix.
