Goodbye, Mac mini server. Apple quietly discontinued the server-ready version of the Mac mini on Thursday as it rolled out updates for its other Mac mini models.
Apple's pre-loaded Mac mini server option is no more
The new Mac mini comes loaded with a faster processor, 802.11ac WiFi, dual Thunderbolt 2 ports, and up to 1TB of solid state storage. It also comes pre-loaded with OS X Yosemite and a lower price point starting at US$499.
The discontinued server model didn't offer much that was different from the other Mac minis prior to yesterday other than OS X Server came pre-installed. Configuring a new Mac mini as a server is a fairly simple task considering the server software package is an add-on for OS X Yosemite and Mavericks available through the Mac App Store for $19.99.
