Apple’s new Mac App Store will officially open its doors on Thursday, January 6, 2011. The Mac App Store will let users buy Mac OS X applications much in the same way they already purchase apps for their iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.
The Mac App Store was unveiled during a special Apple media event in October with the promise that it would launch within 90 days. Users will be able to browse for and purchase Mac-compatible applications, rate applications and read customer reviews. Applications will download and install on your Mac in the same way that App Store purchases install on iOS devices.
“The App Store revolutionized mobile apps,” commented Apple CEO Steve Jobs. “We hope to do the same for PC apps with the Mac App Store by making finding and buying PC apps easy and fun. We can’t wait to get started on January 6.”
The Mac App Store will launch in over 90 countries and will include paid and free applications. Applications will be grouped into categories such as Education, Games, Graphics & Design, Lifestyle, Productivity and Utilities.
