Apple’s built-in weather app will be updated in the upcoming iOS 18 update. While not a major overhaul, two new features can make the app more user-friendly and informative.
Firstly, the app will now display both the actual temperature and the “feels like” temperature. This is a common feature in many weather apps, but Apple’s approach is a bit different. The actual temperature will be displayed prominently, with the “feels like” temperature shown in a smaller font underneath. This way, you’ll see the most important information at a glance.
But that’s not the best bit, “the feels” like temperature won’t clutter the display if it’s very close to the actual temperature. It will only appear when there’s a substantial difference you should be aware of.
What are these two types of temperatures?
While the thermometer tells you the actual air temperature, the feel-like temperature considers how humidity and wind impact how hot or cold we perceive it to be. High humidity traps sweat, making us feel warmer than the actual temperature. Conversely, wind chills exposed skin, especially on cold days, making it feel colder.
Let’s say the actual temperature is 80°F (26°C). However, it’s a very humid day with high humidity. Due to the difficulty of sweating and evaporating moisture, it feels like the temperature might be 85°F (29°C).
Secondly, the Weather app will now use your iPhone’s Contacts app. How? If you have your home and work addresses saved in Contacts, they’ll be automatically added to your weather locations. 9to5Mac revealed this information first.
