Your discussion left out the most important reason that Apple is renegotiating their payment rate. When Apple Music launched, streams during the trial period weren’t going to generate payment for labels and artists. After the Taylor Swift open letter to Apple, they relented and went forward with full payments for all streams. They had agreed to pay higher rates to offset the free trial period, and now that they are paying for everything, they should get a lower rate.
