Thanks for doing the research on the Dyn attack and devices using HomeKit. I don’t have any HomeKit or home automation stuff yet, but I have been looking in to it and this discussion helped clear up some things for me.
Specifically, I have been looking into security cameras for my home, and I am dreading the idea of having to run ethernet cables all over my attic; which lead me to look into Wifi based cameras.
It seems that many of the Wifi based cameras communicate over 802.11n (which is the 2.4Ghz spectrum) and is prone to signal interference from many other devices and other Wifi networks. That does not give a lot of confidence into something I would like to believe is highly reliable.
Also, many of the cameras still require a power cable, so if I have to run a cable at all I am going to provide both power and signal with ethernet.
I know I want to try out the Philips Hue bulbs, but does anyone have any recommendations for security camera systems? Despite complaining about running cables, I am totally willing to install everything myself so I don’t have to pay monthly subscriptions.
