Sarah Hagi writes how the phone call is dying thanks to the rise of robocalling. Now, many people don’t answer unknown callers and instead send them to voicemail.
Speaking to so many people, it struck me how resigned everyone was to this fact: that this is seemingly just the way things are now, with no hope of it getting better, only worse. And while many believe millennials killed talking on the phone because we fear real connection, maybe it’s because we are too scared of getting scammed.
It’s appropriate to come across this article today because I’ve gotten an increase in robocalls in the past couple of days. Aside from using a robocall-blocking app, I go to Settings > Phone > Silence Unknown Callers.

As soon as you have school aged children, you can’t not take calls from numbers you don’t recognize. It’s simply not possible for your contact list to contain the phone numbers of each and every person / organization that might try to reach you during an emergency.
So another case where millennials get blamed for something their elders are doing.
In many European countries, cold-calling ist forbidden by law and comes with severe fines, so it’s an unknown problem to us.
I am on the Do-Not-Call list, but robo callers don’t care. There isn’t enough enforcement and many of the calls maybe originating offshore where our laws don’t apply.
We wouldn’t have telemarketing if people wouldn’t respond to them.
I have a silent ringtone as the default. Family, friends, my doctors, and some businesses get custom ringtones.
