Does Your Device Support Apple Music DRM?

Not every Apple device supports Apple Music. Does yours? Not every Apple device supports Apple Music. Does yours?

Computers

Mac On the Mac you'll need iTunes 12.2 for Apple Music, which doesn't seem too bad because Apple supports that all the way back to OS X 10.7.5. But for Apple Music support you need OS X 10.9.5 or newer, which means you need to have OS X Mavericks or OS X Yosemite installed to play Apple Music tracks through streaming or as downloads.

Windows PC users need iTunes 12.2, too, just like Mac users. They also need Windows 7 or newer for Apple Music support.

iOS Devices

When Apple Music launched, iOS 8.4 was released adding support for the new streaming music service. That means you need an iOS 8-compatible iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to get in on the action.

iPhone iPhone 4s and newer

iPad iPad 2 and newer, iPad mini and newer

iPod touch 5th generation iPod touch

The stinger here is that only the most recent iPod touch model supports Apple Music since it's the only model that also supports iOS 8. If you don't have a current model, you're out of luck.

iPods

iPod nano NO

iPod shuffle NO

Sorry, iPod owners. Apple Music isn't supported, and unless Apple pulls a surprise out of its hat, that won't change. Downloading Apple Music tracks for on the go listening simply isn't an option.

Apple Watch

Apple Watch The iOS 8.4 update you installed on your iPhone also included an Apple Music compatibility update for your Apple Watch. You can use the Music app on your iPhone to download songs that load onto your watch, which means you can go for a hike or a run without your iPhone and still listen to your favorite Apple Music tracks.

Apple TV

Apple TV doesn't support Apple Music yet, but that's going to change this fall. Apple said an update is on the way so you'll be able to stream music and listen to Beats 1 radio. Don't, however, expect to be able to download music to your Apple TV since it's designed to be a streaming-only device.

Android

Here's a first for Apple: Android device support. Apple will be releasing an app this fall that brings Apple Music to mobile devices running Google's Android OS. There isn't any official word yet on which versions of Android will be supported.
