Fall is in the air, which means it’s time to start thinking about which jacket you’re going to wear on chilly days, and maybe which laptop bag to carry, too. SCOTTeVEST is combining the two with its new Off The Grid (OTG) jackets for men and women. The jackets are insulated to keep you warm and include pockets big enough to carry a 15-inch MacBook Pro and iPad, touch-through pockets for your iPhone, accessory pockets, an RFID-proof pocket, and channels to route headphone and charger cables so they’re out of sight. That’s a lot of pockets. The OTG is priced at US$215 and is available now in black or blue for men, and black or plum for women.

If you’re on the hunt for an iPhone 7, iStockNow makes that task easier by showing exactly which stores have some in stock. The site mashes up Google Maps and Apple’s own back-end inventory system to drop pins on ever Apple Store. Green pins mean a store has some iPhone 7 inventory, and red means they’re out of stock. You can also set filters to see if the size, color, and carrier you want are available, and you check specific cities, too. We were able to tell right away that Colorado and California are good states for getting a new iPhone right now; Washington and Florida, not so much.

MacTech Conference 2016 is reaching for the stars—or at least Marshall Smith, the keynote speaker, is. Mr. Smith is NASA’s Director of Cross-Program Systems Integration and Chief Engineer for Exploration Systems Development, as part of Human Explorations and Operations Mission Directorate. That’s all government-speak for saying he’s the guy who coordinates engineering United States manned space flight efforts across the agency’s many employees, contractors, and locations. He’ll be talking about his insights on cross-culture and cross-organization collaboration from his perspective as one of NASA’s top men. MacTech Conference 2016 runs from November 16th through November 18th in Los Angeles and is one of the go-to events from Apple consultants, IT pros, and enterprise pros. John Kheit received his Apple Watch Edition Series 2—the new one made from Ceramic—and shared his unboxing experience. Unlike the ones shown during Apple’s September 7th media event, the $1,299 Apple Watch Edition Series 2 comes with a light gray band. Check out the full video to see what else ships in the box.

Apple gave many iPhone fans what they wanted when they introduced “black” and “jet black” color options for the new iPhone 7, but the company’s intriguing AirPods are only available in traditional “Apple white.” As a taste of what could have been, and what may be soon, designer Martin Hajek created some renderings of jet black AirPods, which happen to look fantastic paired with their corresponding iPhone 7. On Monday TiVo announced their BOLT+ DVR, enhancing the company’s flagship line with a sleek, black unit that includes six tuners and 3TB of recording capacity. Six tuners may seem like a lot until you think about how the current TiVo paradigm works: you have the BOLT+ (or BOLT, or 4+ tuner Roamio) on one TV connected to cable, then you have TiVo Minis at all your other TVs. You only pay a subscription fee for your main device, and each of the Minis can stream live or recorded shows from the host. The trick is, each active Mini occupies one tuner of the host device when in use. Six tuners begins to make a lot of sense if you have even 2 or 3 TVs in action at any one point in time. TiVo is really the only company who is properly addressing the whole-house media viewing solution this way, and it truly makes life a lot simpler. TIVo’s new BOLT+ is priced at $499.99 and will be available online and at brick-and-mortar retail on Thursday, September 15th.

Rolled out to to developers last week, the iOS 10 Golden Master release (Version 10.0.1 14A403) includes a new Announce Calls feature in Settings > Phone. When enabled, your phone will begin ringing as usual and then your ringtone’s volume will duck down while Siri announces the name or number of the caller. You have the option to set this to Always, Headphones & Car, Headphones Only or Never. If set to Always, it will announce through your iPhone’s speaker only when the Ring/Silent switch is in Ring mode. iOS 10 will be available for all users tomorrow, Tuesday, September 13th.

One little, two little, three little dongles. Four little, five little, six little dongles. Seven little, eight little, nine little dongles. 25 little dongles in a row. I know, I skipped a few, but I was stretching the absurdity a little far, even for me. So, what am I am talking about? Dr. Andrew Leavitt gathered up all 25 dongles/adapters Apple currently sells. With folks thinking about the headphone jack going the way of the floppy, it’s an interesting list to consider. I hadn’t realized Apple still sold 30-Pin adapters, for instance. And how about that External USB to Modem adapter? Who has external modems any more? I know, apparently someone. Check out Dr. Leavitt’s list. The image at the top, BTW, is a mockup of a headphone jack-to-Lightning adapter. I can’t imagine Apple could make it so small—you’re going to need some signal processing in there somewhere.

There has been much (pointless) wailing and gnashing of teeth about Apple ditching the headphone jack. We’ll find out if Apple is really doing it Wednesday morning, but there’s at least one Lightning headphone jack adapter already in the wild. It has the unsexy name of HRT i-dSp Headphone digital Sound Processor, and it allows you to connect a regular pair of headphones to an iOS device through the Lightning port. Don’t rush out and buy it just yet, though. For one thing, we don’t know how Apple is handling the transition. For another, this device also requires an Apple Lightning to USB Camera Adapter, making it unwieldy. I expect more seamless devices sooner, rather than later, if Apple does ditch that port. My point in posting this, however, is that there are already solutions on the market for a problem that doesn’t yet exist.

The thing I enjoy the most about posting games like this is the chorus of “Gee, thanks, Bryan. I just wasted my entire afternoon because of you” messages I get. With that in mind, I offer you a cordial “You’re welcome!” reply. Today’s game is called TAP and SMASH. The premise is simple: when you tap, a triangle that represents you moves up in a straight line. Along the way, you collect stars (for points) and coins (for buying power ups, continuing your game, etc.). In your way are circles and lines traveling across your path. When you tap, you move. When you don’t, you fall. That makes avoiding the enemy shapes a matter of timing and luck. I suck at this game, but it has that just-one-more quality. It’s also free to download. For $0.99 you can turn off ads that play every five minutes or so between games. You can also buy coins, but you can have a lot of fun without doing so. I happily paid to turn off ads because I’ve been playing the game a lot. Enjoy!

YouTube user Matthew Rogers has posted a new drone flyover video of Apple Campus 2.0, the so-called Spaceship HQ. This update features some of the glass panels that will form the outer walls of the building, solar panels on the roof, the shrinking dirt mountain on site, many of the outer buildings, fuel cells, and more. I love seeing these updates.  The building is amazing, even in its unfinished state, and being able to watch it grow is fun.

Apple published two blog posts Thursday that highlight some of the first third party apps that will have Siri support in iOS 10. The move comes ahead of the actual launch of iOS 10, and continues the company’s effort to play a broader role in shaping the Apple narrative. In Hey Siri, book me a ride, Apple highlights Uber, Lyft, mytaxi, Didi Chuxingm Vonage, Cisco Spark, and Skype. Users will be able to use Siri to get a ride or make a call without first opening these apps. In Hey Siri, show me my best selfies, Apple shows Siri integration with Pinterest,  Vogue Runway, Looklive, and Pikazo.

The Netflix original series Stranger Things was an instant hit and left us wanting more, and now that’s exactly what we’re getting. The Duffer brothers released a teaser trailer for the new season, and while it doesn’t include any clips from episodes it does list their titles. All nine of them: Mad Max, The Boy Who Came Back To Life, The Pumpkin Patch, The Palace, The Storm, The Pollywog, The Secret Cabin, The Brain, and The Lost Brother. 2017 can’t get here fast enough.

BusinessInsider has a piece on the Carpool Karaoke series Apple is working on for Apple Music. According to Ben Winston, co-founder of series producer Fulwell 73 Productions, the show is going to open up guest spots to celebrities who aren’t musicians. He also said the deal came together because of Jimmy Iovine, and that CBS will limit Carpool Karaoke‘s exposure on The Late Late Show with James Corden to keep it fresh. Carpool Karaoke could be a breakout hit for Apple. For context, the episode featuring Adele (below) has 124.6 million views on YouTube. Mr. Corden is executive producer of the Apple Music spinoff, but won’t be hosting it. Here’s something cool for techies on the go, especially the back-to-school crowd. It’s called MOS Pack, a backpack with a built-in portable charging station for all your gadgets. It has pockets for iPhones (or other smartphones), iPads, your passport, and a spot for a water bottle. On the charging side, the MOS pack doesn’t have a built-in battery—which you’d have to lug around—but instead has a charging station that distributes power to all your gadgets from one plug. Inside it has a cable management system you feed to each gadget in each pockets, and you’re charging everything without having to pull them out. I thought it quite clever at $99.

Philips is adding a motion sensor to its Hue smart bulb product line that’ll turn on your lights when you walk into a room. The Hue Motion Sensor runs on two AAA batteries so you can place it anywhere that works for you, can pair with specific light control scenes for day and night, has adjustable sensitivity, and is smart enough to leave the lights off when it’s still light out. The Hue Motion Sensor will be available in October for US$39.95.

Now that we’ve all had enough time to watch all of Stranger Things on Netflix it’s safe to check out the soundtrack on Apple Music without worrying about spoilers. Stranger Things Volume 1 includes is loaded the show’s decidedly 80s synth tracks from Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein like the show’s theme, Eleven’s theme, and the creepy The Upside Down. The playlist has 36 tracks, and there’s a volume 2 for when you’re ready for even more Stranger Things music. And if you haven’t seen the series yet, clear your schedule now and start watching.

It’s called Manbang. No, seriously. It’s called Manbang. NK News is reporting that’s what North Korea is calling some kind of pseudo-Netflix-like simulacrum of a service. Manbang. The Next Web reported that it means “Everything” in Korean. I assume that’s as true as it is ironic, because the service is limited to whatever propaganda constitutes video content in North Korea. And sure, breaking down into a puddle of lols because of what it sounds like in English makes me 12. I’m OK with that. Oh, and I’m pretending the text below translates as “Manbang.” Because Manbang.

Amazon’s Charlie Kindel, Director of Alexa Smart Home, will be speaking at the CEDIA conference in Dallas on September 16. He’ll talk about the inspiration for voice recognition that came from Star Trek, the original series. This interview by CEDIA provides a foretaste of the presentation and includes an inspiring video of Captain Kirk voice querying the Enterprise computer. What’s also cool and interesting is Mr. Kindel’s description of how customer privacy is maintained with the blue and red indicator ring. He also points to the website a customer built to celebrate Alexa. This is nifty corporate messaging.
