iOS 6.1 Jailbreak "evasi0n" Set for Release Today

The iOS 6.1 jailbreak is due to launch today (Monday), according to a tweet from a member of the development team, as noted by 9to5Mac. “evasi0n,” as the jailbreak will be called, will be compatible with all iOS 6.1 devices except for the third-generation Apple TV.

iOS 6.1 Jailbreak Release Monday

Work on the jailbreak for Apple’s latest version of iOS was first revealed in January. Tweets from another member of the “evad3rs” development team suggested at the time that a release might have occurred on Super Bowl Sunday (February 3).

According to the latest update from evad3rs member @planetbeing, however, the previous tweets suggesting a Sunday release were not specific references to release dates and today’s launch is “the only release date” the team has ever officially given.

Those eagerly awaiting the jailbreak can check in with the team’s website, which currently shows a “97 percent” completion status. As mentioned above, all iDevices that can support iOS 6.1, with the lone exception of the third-generation Apple TV, will be compatible with the jailbreak.

The untethered jailbreak tool will be available on OS X (10.5 or higher), Windows (XP or higher), and Linux (x86 or x86_64 builds only), and is reported to take only five minutes to complete.

As we’ve previously mentioned, jailbreaking a device can be a fun way to access new services and applications that Apple has not yet provided or refuses to offer. However, the process does violate Apple’s terms of service and, while jailbreaking has become relatively simple and safe over the years, the company may refuse to provide technical support or warranty service for devices that have failed during the jailbraking process or while in a jailbroken state.
