The WWDC fever isn’t over yet, but we may need to shift our focus to the upcoming iPhone 16 series, slated to debut this fall alongside the latest software upgrades i.e. iOS 18, and more.
The upcoming iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will be the first iPhones to use Samsung’s advanced M14 OLED screens, according to a new report from South Korean publication ETNews.
What’s more interesting is that the Pixel 9 series will share the same display tech as the iPhone 16 Pro series, according to a supply chain report from The Elec. It’s still speculation at this level, but should Pixel phones sport the same display, it would mark the first instance where Google’s flagship Pixels use OLED materials of the same generation as the iPhone.
According to ETNews, Samsung’s “M” series OLED panels are designed for flagship smartphones, with “14” indicating the use of 14 high-performance materials in their production. This means that should the iPhone 16 Pro series incorporate this display tech, it could offer superior brightness and durability. Meanwhile, the standard iPhones would have to settle for M12 display tech.
A previous report suggested that the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro models might reach up to 1,200 nits of typical SDR brightness, which is 20% brighter than the current models. This boost is probably because of Samsung’s new panels. However, the peak HDR brightness should stay at 1,600 nits, the same as the current iPhone 15 Pro display.
Furthermore, the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max are rumored to feature larger screens compared to their predecessors i.e. iPhone 15 Pro series. Per multiple reports, the iPhone 16 Pro could sport a 6.3-inch display, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max could sport a larger 6.9-inch display. What’s more, the iPhone 16 Pro series will bring a new Capture button and several other enhancements.
