Adobe InDesign forum members noticed the problem on the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models Apple released in June after installing MacBook Pro (Mid 2012) Software Update 1.0. Without the update installed, InDesign users aren’t experiencing the crashing issue.

The update, according to Apple’s release notes, improved graphics stability, external display support, and USB 3 device support.

Adobe staff member Scott Worthington told forum members, “At this time it appears the update is removing an API we use to control our use of system icons. At present the solution appears to be to rollback the update for the software to continue to function as expected.”

He added that Adobe’s engineers are also testing to see who the bug impacts Mountain Lion, due out some time this month, and said “We’re taking this issue very seriously.”

Until Adobe releases an update to fix the issue, InDesign users can restore their operating system back to the factory installation. Rolling back to the version of OS X that shipped on the new MacBook models may be something of a pain, but at least it offers a temporary workaround for a bug that leaves InDesign essentially unusable.
