Japan’s Ministry of Economy has ordered Apple Computer to provide information about the faulty Sony batteries found in many PowerBook and iBook computers in response to a laptop that caught fire. According to Forbes, Apple spokesperson Michiko Matsumoto confirmed that in April one of the company’s laptops overheated and caught fire. The user received minor burns during the incident.
Apple has initiated a voluntary recall of over one million Sony-made laptop batteries due to a design flaw that can cause the cells to over heat and potentially catch fire.
The company says that it has received nine reports of batteries overheating in the United States. Two users suffered minor burns after handling overheated batteries, and there are also reports of minor property damage.
Apple representatives did not state if the laptop in Japan was a PowerBook G4 or an iBook G4.
