Apple is set to introduce a new compact camera module (CCM) in its upcoming MacBook models powered by the M5 chip, which is expected to be released in 2025. According to well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the Chinese optical lens company Sunny Optical will be the supplier of this new component.
Sunny Optical will mass-produce these CCMs in Vietnam, and will provide a complete imaging system integrated into a compact form factor.
What sets Sunny Optical apart is its ability to provide both the CCM and lenses in a single package, a capability no other supplier currently offers Apple. This vertical integration can enhance camera quality, especially with the stronger M5 chip.
If MacBook CCM shipments are successful, Kuo predicts that Sunny Optical could also become the CCM supplier for future iPhone and iPad models.
Sunny Optical aims to restore its 2023 lens supply allocation by 2025, fueling its business momentum that year.
This change in camera module suppliers could result in thinner and lighter MacBook designs and improve camera performance. Additionally, it might signify a diversification strategy for Apple, reducing its reliance on current suppliers.
