Apple has introduced a new feature called “Distraction Control” in the latest iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia developer betas. Like the iconic Thanos snap from the Marvel universe, this feature allows users to eliminate unwanted elements from web pages with a simple tap.
Distraction Control gives users control of their browsing experience by hiding distracting items such as intrusive ads, cookie banners, and even specific website sections. With an animation reminiscent of the Infinity Gauntlet’s power, selected elements vanish from the screen, which in return provides a cleaner and more focused reading environment.
While the feature is being hailed as a potential game-changer for online users frustrated with cluttered websites, Apple clarifies that it’s not a full-fledged ad blocker. Distracting items hidden using Distraction Control will reappear over time, and the feature doesn’t sync across devices.
Despite these limitations, early feedback from users has been overwhelmingly positive. Many are excited about the potential to enhance readability, reduce page loading times, and improve privacy by limiting exposure to tracking elements.
Drawbacks (as of now): Users will need to manually select items to hide, and the effectiveness against dynamic content, like constantly changing ads, may be limited. Removing certain elements could unintentionally impact website functionality or user experience in some cases.
