TSMC and Largan have shed light on the upcoming iPhone 16 orders for the second half of 2024 (2H24); despite rumors and analysts calling for increased orders after the WWDC event and the introduction of Apple Intelligence, these suppliers have indicated that iPhone 16 orders may not have seen substantial growth.
TSMC, Apple’s primary chip manufacturer, stated,
We did not see kind of unit growth suddenly increased.
Similarly, Largan, a supplier of high-end camera lenses, mentioned that orders for high-end models this year are similar to last year.
This means that the iPhone 16 orders for 2H24 have remained stable, with assembly manufacturers reporting around 87 million units, slightly lower than the iPhone 15 orders for 2H23, which stood at approximately 91 million units.
It’s not surprising, as we recently covered a report stating that the iPhone 15 lineup has been facing a sales slump in its third quarter. Data from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) shows a big decline in market share compared to previous iPhone launches.
The combined sales of the four iPhone 15 models dropped to 67% of total iPhone sales, a strong contrast to the 79% share held by the iPhone 14 models in the same period last year. I believe that Apple’s decision not to include standard industrial features, such as a 90 or 120 Hz screen refresh rate, could be the reason for this. Currently, the screen refresh rate is stuck at 60 Hz, and there are rumors that the base models of the iPhone 16 will retain the same specifications.
Many have speculated that the launch of Apple Intelligence could be the driving force behind the rumored increase in iPhone 16 orders. However, Apple Intelligence will only be available in Beta for US users in 2H24, and it will initially support only English.
