DEVON Apps, MacJournal 3.1, CopyCat 2.5, Eight Others Add Tiger Support, More

With Apple set to release Mac OS X v10.4 “Tiger” on April 29, developers are busy updating their software with support for the new operating system. Eleven companies have made such announcements: DEVONtechnologies has released DEVONthink Personal Edition 1.9.3, DEVONagent 1.7 and DEVONnote 1.7; Mariner Software has shipped MacJournal 3.1; SubRosaSoft has made the drive cloning tool CopyCatX 2.5 available; Salling Software has released the remote control utility Salling Clicker 2.2.1; Stunt Software has shipped PhotoBooth 1.5; Presenta has released iGetter 2.3; Bitcartel has updated RadioLover and iRecordMusic; REAL Software has produced a Spotlight plug-in for REALbasic; Midnight Mage Software has released RollCall Directory 1.3; Glucose Development Corp. has shipped WeatherPop Advance 2.0.6; and Yazsoft has released Speed Download 3.0.7.

Running under Tiger, DEVONthink Personal Edition 1.9.3 supports the new PDFKit that adds more features for viewing PDFs and can import images in JPEG2000, Adobe DNG, OpenEXR and RAW formats. In addition, the application can also now produce rich text documents with feature tables, flexible paragraph spacing and other capabilities available only with Tiger. DEVONnote, which is DEVONthink’s “little brother,” also includes the new rich text document editing features.

DEVONagent 1.7’s Tiger support allows it to display PDFs without a plug-in, in addition to adding such non-Tiger features as the ability to add Web pages as archives in the DEVONthink database and more. DEVONthink Personal Edition 1.9.3 (US$40) and DEVONagent 1.7 ($35) require Mac OS X 10.3.9 or Mac OS X 10.4 while DEVONnote 1.7 ($20) requires Mac OS X 10.2.7 or later. A DEVONthink and DEVONagent bundle is available for $65.

In addition to support for Tiger, MacJournal 3.1 offers support for .Mac, a calendar view, automatic data backups and more. It’s free for registered users of version 3.0. The full version is $24.95 and requires Mac OS X v10.2.

CopyCatX 2.5 also includes improvements beyond Tiger support: it features improved performance and the ability to clone iPods, TiVo machines and Windows- and Linux-formatted disks. Owners of all versions of CopyCatX can upgrade for free. The full software is $49.95 as a download or $59.95 on CD and requires Mac OS X v10.3.

The Tiger-ready version of Salling Clicker, a utility that turns a cell phone or PDA into a two-way remote control, features support for new cell phone models as well as performance tweaks and bug fixes. Salling Software added that version 3.0 of Salling Clicker will be available in late spring or early summer. The current version is a free upgrade for existing customers and $19.95 for the full software. A Bluetooth-equipped Mac running Mac OS X v10.2.8 or higher is required.

PhotoBooth, Stunt Software’s photo printing utility, not only brings Tiger support into version 1.5 but also offers such new features as the ability to print multiple images simultaneously in single sheets or on the same page and an improved interface. In addition, it can size photos in metric measurements and is now compatible with the latest version of iPhoto. Stunt Software didn’t indicate if this is a free update, but the full version is $29.95, and Mac OS X v10.3 is required.

Presenta’s iGetter 2.3, a utility for managing and accelerating downloads, has been optimized for Tiger and Safari 2.0 and includes support for Firefox cookies, a new Site Explorer cache for easier viewing of already-explored Web sites, a history combo box in Site Explorer that saves all explored sites, bug fixes and more. Everyone with version 2.x can upgrade for free. A license for the full version is $25 and Mac OS X v10.2 is required.

Bitcartel’s RadioLover, which enables users to record MP3 radio streams as individual songs, and iRecordMusic, which records Internet music, sports and news for listening to on a computer or mobile device, offer nothing new beyond Tiger support. The former is $15 and requires Mac OS X v10.2; the latter is $24.95 and requires Mac OS X v10.3.

REAL’s Spotlight plug-in, which is free, searches any project made with REALbasic 3.0 or higher, looking for specific lines of source code. REALbasic is a cross-platform development environment for use with Mac, Windows and Linux.

Midnight Mage’s RollCall Directory, a print utility for Address Book, now supports International Address Formats and adds a new multiple URL field, in addition to Tiger support, which enables the creation of Smart Groups and adds fields to the Address Book layout. This is a free update for anyone who owns RollCall Directory 1.0 or higher. The full version is $14.99 and Mac OS X v10.2 or higher is required.

Glucose’s WeatherPop Advance 2.0.6 offers performance enhancements in addition to Tiger support. While the developer hasn’t provided a release date for the next version, it has said that WeatherPop Advance 2.1 will feature a new radar view consisting of an enhanced radar image from the U.S. National Weather Service. Glucose also promised an upcoming Dashboard widget that will display the image. Upgrades are free while the full version is $8. Mac OS X v10.2 is required.

Finally, the new version of Speed Download, which is free for all owners of versions 2.x and 3.x, features performance improvements and bug fixes in addition to Tiger support. In addition, its new Speed Download plug-in offers better compatibility with Mac OS X v10.3.9 and v10.4. The full software is $20, with multiple license discounts available.
