Patreon Creators to Lose 30% of Revenue Due to Apple’s In-App Purchase Fees

Popular crowdfunding platform Patreon has announced that it will be forced to implement Apple’s in-app purchase system, which will result in a big financial impact on creators overall. Beginning in November 2024, all new Patreon memberships purchased through the iOS app will be subject to a 30% fee imposed by Apple.

This means that for every dollar pledged by an iOS user, their favorite creators will only receive 70 cents. The remaining 30 cents will go directly to Apple. To offset this loss, Patreon is offering creators the option to automatically increase their membership prices exclusively for iOS users. But this could lead to increased costs for supporters, and overall, we can expect decreased number of supporters.

The changes also affect creators who currently use first-of-the-month or per-creation billing plans. Patreon will be transitioning all creators to subscription billing to comply with Apple’s requirements.

While existing Patreon members will not be affected by the fee, the changes are expected to impact creators’ earnings and potentially drive away new supporters. Many creators, as expected, are expressing frustration and concern over the situation, requesting their fans to consider supporting them through alternative platforms.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how Patreon and its creators will adapt to these new challenges imposed by Apple.
