Google Buys GrandCentral Web Phone Service

Google made a major move to enter the Web-based communication market by announcing that it purchased GrandCentral Communications on Monday. GrandCentral offers a service that allows integrates all of a user’s phone numbers and voice mail boxes into a single account that can be accessed from the Web.

The deal will allow Google to broaden its Web-based business user offerings by providing a single access point for voice communications, and the company will likely find a way to integrate the service with its existing Web-based applications.

Google may also find a way to integrate GrandCentral’s services with Apple’s new iPhone — the combination iPod and smartphone that Apple released only days ago on June 29.

Google did not reveal any details about the GrandCentral acquisition deal.
