Apple is reportedly changing things up for the iPhone 17 lineup. It will introduce an ultra-thin iPhone 17 Slim model and discontinue the Plus size.
Sales figures suggest the iPhone 17 Plus might be getting the axe. With the standard, Pro and Pro Max models covering the high-end market, the Plus seems redundant.
Here’s a bit of history about the Plus series: The first iPhone Plus model was the iPhone 6 Plus, which Apple introduced alongside the iPhone 6 in September 2014. The Plus models were designed to offer a larger screen size compared to the standard iPhone model.
Here’s a list of all iPhone models that have included “Plus” in their name:
- iPhone 6 Plus (released September 2014)
- iPhone 6S Plus (released September 2015)
- iPhone 7 Plus (released September 2016)
- iPhone 8 Plus (released September 2017)
- iPhone 14 Plus (released September 2023): This is the return of the “Plus” naming scheme after a hiatus of a few years.
- iPhone 15 Plus is the latest variant of the Plus model.
Apple is rumored to be exploring a new design direction with the iPhone 17 Slim, which will launch in late 2025. This phone will have a sleek, ultra-thin design but won’t have the most powerful specs; it’d still be more expensive than the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max.
Leaks suggest the iPhone 17 Slim will feature a sizeable 6.6-inch screen, a capable A19 chip (though not the top-tier A19 Pro), a single rear camera, and a titanium-aluminum alloy frame.
While these are just rumors, it seems Apple might be venturing into exciting new design territory with the iPhone 17 Slim.
