A new report by CIRP (Consumer Intelligence Research Partners) reveals a surprising trend in iPhone sales. While Apple is attracting a record number of switchers from Android, these new iPhone users are opting for older, cheaper models instead of the latest iPhone 15.
In the June 2024 quarter, a record 17% of iPhone buyers were previously on Android. This is the highest percentage in the past five years and means that Apple’s iPhones are becoming more attractive to users outside the iOS ecosystem. But, this might not be all good news for Apple.
The report indicates that these new Android switchers, along with first-time iPhone buyers, are gravitating towards older iPhones like the iPhone 14, 13, and even the budget-friendly iPhone SE. These phones offer a good balance of features and affordability, making them an attractive alternative to the premium-priced iPhone 15 models.
This goes hand in hand with a lower upgrade rate among existing iPhone users. Traditionally, Apple relied on iPhone owners to buy new models every few years. Not to be harsh, but this is also a reality check for Apple. Each year, newer iPhones are coming up with fewer and fewer upgrades, which makes older versions almost the same but significantly cheaper.
However, Apple seems to know about this trend. While this year’s upcoming iPhone 16 lineup is not seeing any major upgrades, the iPhones in the upcoming years will reportedly consist of a Slim variant and a Flip variant. Not just this, even the base models will have a much-required screen with a 120Hz refresh rate.
Overall, attracting new users is always a positive sign, but Apple might need to adjust its strategy. This could prompt Apple to re-evaluate its pricing strategy or introduce more compelling features in future iPhone models.
