Apple to MobileMe users: It’s time to move to iCloud
The launch of iCloud on October 12, 2011, started the countdown to the end for MobileMe. iCloud replaces the service, although it doesn’t offer all of the features that were included with MobileMe.
iCloud kept MobileMe’s me.com and mac.com email accounts, along with calendar and contact syncing, and Find My iPhone. It added calendar sharing, Wi-Fi backup support for iOS devices, document syncing, Photo Stream for sharing pictures, and iTunes in the Cloud. Where MobileMe cost US$99 a year, iCloud is free.
Apple started pushing MobileMe users to migrate to iCloud in February to help avoid a last minute rush of users trying to make the switch. The Mac Observer’s Melissa Holt did her part to help with the transition by detailing how to back up your contacts and calendars before moving to iCloud.
Apple will shut down MobileMe on June 30 which leaves on 26 days for subscribers to finish their transition to iCloud or other online services.
