watchOS 5.1.2 is rolling out to everyone, and if you’re the owner of the Apple Watch Series 4 you’ll be getting the ECG heart functionality.
[An Emergency Physician Explains the Apple Watch ECG]
watchOS 5.1.2
There will be an actual ECG app on your Watch, which will only work on the Series 4. This is the first over-the-counter ECG device that consumers can purchase. It uses special electrodes in the rear crystal and Digital Crown to take single-lead heart readings. To take a reading:
- Open the ECG app.
- Hold your finger on the Crown for 30 seconds.
Readings will be classified as atrial fibrillation, sinus rhythm or inconclusive. If the Watch detects irregular heart rhythms on five checks over a minimum of 65 minutes, it will warn you of potential health problems. Readings are stored in the iOS Health app and can then be shared with your doctor.
