Retina Support for Photoshop CS6 To Be Introduced December 11

Adobe may unveil an update to its flagship Photoshop CS6 software on Tuesday, December 11, bringing Retina support to the application for the first time. Hints of a Retina-enable Photoshop come from an Adobe YouTube video released Tuesday.

The video was released to advertise the company’s Create Now Live event, scheduled for December 11, which promises to reveal “what’s next in Adobe Photoshop.” In the video, an individual appears to be using Photoshop on an Apple MacBook Pro with Retina Display. While that fact alone may not be enough to presume forthcoming Retina support – many companies have used Apple’s attractive hardware in advertisements without intending to demonstrate the capabilities of that hardware – the video does zoom close to the screen several times, clearly revealing Retina resolution in the software.

After Apple introduced Retina displays for Mac in June 2012 with the launch of the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display, and the subsequent launch of the 13-inch Retina model in October, software developers were forced to update their OS X applications to take advantage of the dramatically increased pixel density.

Adobe announced in late August that it planned to bring Retina support to its Creative Suite 6 applications in “the next few months.”

Following up on that promise, a version of Lightroom 4 was released in early November, bringing Retina or “HiDPI” support to the app for the first time, albeit still in “release candidate” form. Now, with the hints from the company’s “Create Now Live” video, Adobe appears poised to expand Retina support to Photoshop.

The Create Now Live event starts Tuesday, December 11 with a live-streamed keynote at 10:00 a.m. PST. Those interested can sign up with Adobe for updates.

It is unclear if a Retina-enabled Photoshop will be released to the public at that time or if the software will simply be introduced with a general release later. Regardless, Creative Cloud subscribers will gain access to the software as soon as it is available.
