Honda and its Acura luxury line will include support for Siri’s hands-free integration, called “Eyes Free” in some 2013 models, the carmaker announced Wednesday. The 2013 Honda Accord and 2013 Acura RDX and ILX models will offer Eyes Free as a dealer-installed option.
Eyes Free was introduced by Apple during the 2012 Worldwide Developers Conference. As explained by the company:
Through the voice command button on your steering wheel, you’ll be able to ask Siri questions without taking your eyes off the road. To minimize distractions even more, your iOS device’s screen won’t light up. With the Eyes Free feature, ask Siri to call people, select and play music, hear and compose text messages, use Maps and get directions, read your notifications, find calendar information, add reminders, and more.
“iPhone has become so integral to people’s lives that they continue to use them in their vehicles, ” Vicki Poponi, assistant vice president of automobile product planning for American Honda, said in the company’s press release. “Offering Honda and Acura owners Siri and its Eyes Free mode via Bluetooth is an incredible opportunity to provide next-generation connectivity and meet our customer’s ever-changing needs.”
Pricing for the feature and availability date for the select models is not yet known. Apple is also working with other car companies to integrate Siri, including BMW, GM, Mercedes, Land Rover, Jaguar, Audi, Toyota, and Chrysler.
