Twitpic originally said it would close on September 25, but delayed when the possibility of a buyer for the company came into play. In the end, a deal couldn't be reached with any buyer, so Twitpic is packing up and going home.

The company said on its blog,

We worked through a handful of potential acquirers and exhausted all potential options. We were almost certain we had found a new home for Twitpic, but agreeable terms could not be met.

Twitpic's founders said the company didn't have the legal resources to fight Twitter over the trademark violation claim, so instead of coming up with a new name, they chose a more terminal option.

People that used the service can download their photos through Twitpic's export tool in account settings. You have until October 25 to export your content, or it'll be lost forever.
