Jordan Geary and Cody Talk ‘Helpsters’ Season 2

Sesame Workshop producer Jordan Geary and Cody the Helpster (puppeteer Stephanie D’Abruzz) talk about “Helpsters” season 2 and the overall goals of the show. New episodes arrive October 16.

Apple is just where storytellers go to tell their stories. And at Sesame Workshop, we pride ourselves on being the leading educational entertainment company for kids. When were talking about what we would like to do together, the biggest thing everyone kept on saying is, “We want to help people. We want to help kids.” What kind of content can we make that can help kids? Well, why don’t we just have a team of monsters called the Helpsters, and all they do is help people?

Astronomy Professor Dr. Mario Juric - BGM Interview

Dr. Mario Juric is professor of astronomy at the Department of Astronomy of the University of Washington. He holds a Ph.D. in Astrophysical Sciences from Princeton University. His research is at the intersection of astrophysics and computer science and engineering: developing systems and algorithms for use with large data sets to answer questions about the Universe.

We chatted about how Mario was inspired to become an astronomer, and one notable name came up: James T. Kirk. That’s all it took. Oh, and also Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke. Most of the show, however, centered around two things: mapping our Milky Way galaxy and and his work on the Vera C. Rubin Observatory project, previously the LSST. Starting in 2021, this telescope will capture panoramic images of the entire visible sky twice each week for 10 years, building up our deepest, widest, image of the universe. The result: hundreds of petabytes of imaging data for close to 40 billion objects. One mission: planetary defense!

Amazon is Increasingly Pushing The Limits of Privacy

Amazon announced a host of new hardware products at the end of last month. One of those was the Ring Always Home Cam surveillance drone. Wired highlighted how that product, and others, are prompting major privacy concerns about the company.

Meanwhile, the biometric data that Amazon Go will collect is particularly sensitive, because unlike a password you can’t simply change it if a hacker steals it or it gets unintentionally exposed. Amazon has a strong record for maintaining the security of its massive cloud infrastructure, but there have been lapses across the sprawling business. The stakes are already phenomenally high; the more data the company holds the more risk it takes on. “Amazon has a major genomics cloud platform, so maybe they hold your DNA and now they’re going to have your palm as well? Plus all of these devices inside your house. And your purchase history on Prime. That’s a lot of information. That’s a lot of personal information,” says Nina Alli, executive director of Defcon’s Biohacking Village and a health care security researcher.
