Apple iPad vs. HP TouchPad: Game On

If I were to predict, right now, who the two front runners will be in the tablet wars, I’d start by thinking about what makes a tablet appealing to everyday consumers and how consumers get exposed to the product. For example, Apple’s iPad is incredibly easy to use and you can pick one up at…

Browsers Have Changed. Have You?

The most important thing to appreciate about a browser is how it serves the user. If the user has never had a security snafu or a compromise, a browser is likely deemed “good enough” and then the browser choice is based on other factors, such as look-and-feel, features, loyalty to, say, Apple and so on.…

Particle Debris (wk. ending 2/4) The Wonders of Apple

The insane demand for the iPhone 4 at Verizon suggests not only demand for a great product but some disaffection with AT&T. Personally, while I think there will be an initial burst of movement away from AT&T combined with Verizon customers abandoning their Android phones in favor of the iPhone, it’ll all settle out in…

What Time is it? Your iPad May Not be Sure

3G iPads can get time signals from a cell tower and update their internal clock to compensate for drift. While cell towers can often be off by as much as 30 seconds, it’s usually just a few seconds. Owners of 3G iPads are in generally good shape in that regard. Unfortunately, the Wi-Fi-only iPad (and the iPod…

An Interview with O’Reilly Ebook Guru, Andrew Savikas

TMO: In the context of declining to use DRM, what is O’Reilly’s philosophy and strategy regarding the publishing of online books?Andrew Savikas: Tim O’Reilly likes to say that books are “user interfaces on information.” In other words, books are a technology, just like any other. They’re devices for sharing ideas. And like any other technology,…

What if Apple Continues iPad 1 Sales After April?

That’s exactly what’s happening with the iPad. The tablet competitors that are any good are still not shipping in quantity and and Apple is on the eve of introducing its second generation iPad. Given that Apple shipped over 14 million iPads in 2010, it’s very likely that the cost of parts is now down considerably…

Particle Debris (wk. ending 1/14) Coming Down, Out of the Clouds

Here’s a chart from Business Insider that lists the reasons why some people still haven’t joined Facebook. “…they think it’s a waste of time. And they think that increasingly, as they see their friends sucked into a vortex of looking at photos, playing FarmVille, and posting status updates.” In Colorado recently a mother allowed her…

The Men Behind the Apple-Verizon Deal

However, in the end, only Apple’s name appears on the Verizon iPhone and Verizon doesn’t load any of it’s own apps. The booming success of the Apple-AT&T relationship seems to have influenced Verizon’s McAdam. In addition to building cell towers on Apple’s campus for testing, the two companies reached an even more remarkable agreement: swapping…

Solar Walk Updates Are Notable

The first version of Solar Walk for iOS, from Vito Technology, reviewed here was disappointing. Since then, Vito Technology has made some significant improvements to the application. And now, it’s also available in the Mac App Store as well. Inner solar system (v1.6)Solar Walk v1.4 disappointed me. While it was a dazzling program, I took…

Top this: Cosmic Top, Boundless Joy-Toy for iPad

Cosmic Top for the iOS isn’t a game. Rather, it’s a toy. There’s no goal other than to create visual effects and amuse yourself. And it’s a geek toy with gyroscopic color and Euler’s equations for spinning bodies. The only limit is your own imagination and playfulness. The iOS system is famous for games. But…

Particle Debris (wk. ending 1/7) Illusions and Delusions

Can this save the newspapers — or undo them?Related to all this is the need for publishers to have a direct relationship with subscribers and the desire by Apple to keep certain customer information private. Google appears to be trying to woo some publishers, like Time Warner and Condé Nast with the idea that Android…

When NOT to Follow Steve Jobs

Recently, I reviewed the ZAGGmate, an integrated iPad clamshell case with a keyboard inside. The ergonomics of that device dictate that the keyboard be horizontal but the iPad and its iOS be vertical, and that means reaching out and touching in between keystrokes. Independent of the review of the product, and it’s a great product…

NewerTech NuStand for iPad Has Design Flaws

The Newer Technlogy NuStand Alloy stand for iPad is designed to hold the iPad upright, in portrait or landscape mode. Major design flaws, however, prevent it from fulfilling its potential. Storm Clouds Are Coming

In previous times, before the Internet changed the rules, companies would conceive of products, test them for fitness, merchantibility and safety. Then customers would make a considered decision as to whether the product’s utility compared to the price created a favorable sales proposition. Today, however, the sophistication of software and the Internet has created many…

The Big Changes to My Tech Life in 2011

MacBook Pro -> iMac. This was already done in October. My 1st generation Unibody MacBook Pro (Late 2008) with a C2D, just two cores and a slow hard disk just couldn’t keep up with all the multitasking and loads I was putting on it. Especially with Parallels. I was waiting on my computer far too…

NuGuard Shell for iPad Guards Well

There are several different case types for the iPad. One type is a clamshell-like case that fits snugly around the back, and it’s preferable for many purposes. The Newer Technology NuGuard Shell is one of those. It’s great and very modestly priced. I was watching an episode of ABC’s Castle recently, and Alexis was sitting…

Apple, Sex, and Corporate Values

There is a time honored technique, around much of the world, to use sex to sell goods. And by sex, I mean something so innocent as a pretty woman selling laundry soap or something as upsetting as a glimpse of a strangled female movie star to lure people into a crime drama. Even so, the…

How The Daily iPad Newspaper Can Succeed

Much has been written about whether this project, The Daily, by Mr. Murdoch will be successful or not. He’s sinking a lot of money into it, but he has the money to try. Some point out that we already have all the news sources and apps that we need and that Mr. Murdoch and his…

Calculator HD for iPad: Classy but Fatally Flawed
