  • I have been meaning to make this comment for a couple weeks now.

The operating narrative of TMO and particularly John Martellaro has been that Disney and Apple are competing regarding Disney+ and Apple TV+. When I heard about both services initially, I never thought that. Disney and Apple have had a close relationship for years through Steve Jobs and Pixar.

I always viewed that they are indirectly working together to undermine the business models of other streaming services like HBO Max, CBS All Access, WB’s unnamed streaming service, and others. I also think both are trying to be aggressive to contain Netflix’s level of consumer attention in video streaming.

I would like to see your thoughts viewing this as a possible cooperating perspective rather than a competing context.

    1. Agreed, they’re not competing. There’s no comparison. Disney has the widest catalogue. Apple has none. Co-operation isn’t the Disney way. Apple isn’t much for it either. Best we could hope for is they don’t wreck each other’s plans.

Iger leaving Apple’s board is an interesting twist. Like a certain G-departure long ago, WAY too late. Maybe it’s a bad look moving ahead, but being there for all the strategy and planning, it’s almost moot leaving now. That said, a year of tv+ for a purchase was probably they only way to get the ‘service’ started. It will take a year to establish any kind of track record and even then, Apple’s + is hardly a good price, just an impulse buy price, maybe below the threshold of subscription fatigue.
