Great discussion as I continue to monitor the SMART errors on my 27″ iMac Intel i7 32 GB 3 TB hard disk. Since I edit astrophotographs in Photoshop and Lightroom, I think I need lots of RAM even with a M1 chip. So I’m hoping that an M1 or M2 iMac with more RAM gets announced at next week’s WWDC and ships before the 3 TB drive fails!
Really enjoyed your discussion with ‘the big guy’.
I am definitely one of those waiting, for perhaps the first time in my post-training professional life, for one of Apple’s desktops – that expected 27” iMac with Apple Silicon (M?).
I concur with your assessment that 16GB on Apple’s M1 SOC is not the same thing as 16GB on an Intel CPU powered device. That SOC is engineered to be substantially more efficient, not simply in the documented powere consumption, but in other metrics.
In the meantime, I’m bird-dogging both the shipment of my incoming iPad Pro and WWDC to see if anything that comes out of it changes my mind about which configuration makes the most sense (ordered the 12.9” with the works, all the works).
